Nuwa Study

Nuwa” is a goddess who often appears in the Chinese mythologies. Legends always described her as “the Creator” or “ the Repairer.” Nuwa was the leader of the matriarchal society that existed in Chinese ancient times. Her efforts to create and bring salvation to the world urged people to worship her as “huang” (a royal), “di” (an empress) and “shen” (a goddess). For example, in The Classics of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Ching) is written, “Nuwa ,hence, the daughter of the god and who becomes an empress.”*Nuwa and her people take the form of snake or dragon as their tribe’s symbol which developed into an image of a chimerical Nuwa, with human’s head but a snake or dragon’s body. According to archaeological and anthropological findings, Nuwa may have been born in the Neolithic era, about 8300 years ago, at present-day Gansu province in China. During that period, she summoned all social groups and led them to overcome harsh environment and natural disasters. The life of human beings could then continue and flourish into the time being. Her spirit and legend still exist and are passed on in all societies worldwide.*The Classics of Mountains and Seas (1999) is also translated into A Chinese Bestiary: Strange Creatures from the Guideways through Mountains and Seas (2002) and Shan Hai Ching: Legendary Geography and Wonders of Ancient China (1985).
